Stevens
Panel, 2003. 52cm x 66cm
Fused glass in four sections
This is the sample panel that I produced for the Worshipful
Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass national Stevens
Competition in 2003 for which I won first prize. Every competition
is based upon a specific commission for a piece of architectural
glass. In 2003, the brief was for four sash windows for a
Chapel of Rest in a Funeral Directors which was run from a
150 year old cottage in Sussex. The design had to be non-denominational,
peaceful and yet uplifting, and had to take the existing window
structure into account.
I chose to create a design that would evoke an atmosphere
of protection, calm and peacefulness where people could be
free to contemplate without interruption from the outside
world. The key uplifting element is characterised by the yellow
area which represents a portal to the dimension of spirit
and contains a feather fused inside the glass. The feather,
with its possibility of flight, represents a means of accessing
another dimension and is therefore a metaphor for the transition
of the spirit from life to death.
